HI! 👋
WE'RE ONGGIOnggi is a fermentation market and cafe in Portland, Maine. You can think of us as your fermenty friends. Come by and say hello!
(It’s pronounced “OHNG-ghee”, like mixing “only” with “eggy”.)
💚 We’re inspired by Korean earthenware vessels called onggi (옹기), famous for their fermentation-friendly properties and role in everyday life. Kimchi, soy sauce, and makgeolli (rice wine) are all made in onggis!
This onggi is made by our friend, Adam Field in Montana.
Hey! Our names are Erin Zobitz, Marcus Im, and Amy Ng - and we’re a team of food lovers and fermentation nerds. Let us know if we can help with anything. You can find us hanging at the shop or just a short DM away. KIT!!
As life-long fans, we’ve enjoyed the benefits of fermentation everyday: richer flavors, improved health, and cultured community.
But look around and we’re surrounded by industrialized products and alienated by food chains.
So, we wanted to do our part in making the benefits of fermentation more accessible and approachable. Fueled with fizzy fervor, we opened Onggi as our dream shop in April 2021.
